Featuring John Leslie in the role of James Beard.
Before Julia Child and long before today’s proliferation of cooking shows, there was James Beard, the first TV chef. He brought a love for fine cooking (and a sense of humor) to the small screen in 1946 and helped establish an American cuisine based on fresh ingredients.
Famous for quips like, “If ever I had to practice cannibalism, I might manage if there were enough tarragon around,” Beard went on to become America’s first “foodie,” and the award bearing his name is still the prize most coveted by chefs across the country.
Larger than life (literally and metaphorically), American culinary icon James Beard was a complex, entertaining, beloved and frustrating friend and mentor to many.
Openly gay even though his primary audience was middle-America housewives, Beard always kept his phone number listed and famously took calls from anyone anytime who needed a little cooking advice.
I Love to Eat (a love story with food) invites you to meet the man described as “the face and belly of American gastronomy” in this solo play that imagines a late night in Beard’s Greenwich Village home where he shares recipes and cooking tips, gossips, spills secrets, fights loneliness, talks to his best pal Julia Child on the phone, sings a song and even reenacts some of the wilder moments from his landmark 1946 television show, in which he infamously shared the screen with a certain cow named Elsie … A few lucky audience members also get to dine on one of Beard’s signature hors d’oeuvres—lovingly prepared right in front of us as part of the play.

COMING THIS SUMMER!
New Players Theater Guild is proud to announce our 2025 Youth Summer Program!
This year, we welcome Elizabeth Sarao to direct our musical,
YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN!
About our director:
Elizabeth Sarao will be new to NPTG’s youth program this year but not new to NPTG and not new to working with youth and children.
Several years ago when New Players Theatre Guild produced CINDERELLA at Memorial Middle School, Elizabeth was our “Cinderella!” Since that time Elizabeth has immersed herself in music as a church cantor, a music teacher and children’s choir director at St. Anna Catholic School in Leominster, and by participating in musical productions with Manchester Community Players, Stageworks, Stratton Players and Theater at the Mount.
Elizabeth is very excited to be involved in this production of YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN because she just loves theater and understands the multiple benefits of the theater experience for children and for youth.
Although CHARLIE BROWN has several central characters, Elizabeth plans to include the whole ensemble of kids, wherever possible.
About the program:
As usual, the program will consist of three sessions per week, tentatively on Sunday afternoons and Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.
The total program length is extended to allow for some family vacation time and still adequate rehearsal. This year, we are returning to a Thursday-Sunday performance schedule, which allows more time for family summer activities.
In addition to rehearsal for the show itself, there will be more time to improve the kids' performances and expose them to other areas of theater crafts as time permits.
We strongly suggest that your child or children be present at all rehearsals for "production week," August 6th-13th, as well as ALL FOUR performances. Please try to schedule family vacations or other obligations around those dates.
The workshop will be STRICTLY limited to 25 children, between the ages of 10 and 18. (Age exceptions may be made on the low end.)
Although all the kids enrolled in the program WILL be in the show, we will be holding "placement auditions" during the week after schools close for the summer. (Date and time TBA.)
Please send in your tuition as soon as possible. The instructions for signing up your kid(s) are below.
Performances of YOU'RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN will take place August 14th, 15th, 16th, at 7:30pm, and August 17th at 2:00 pm.

Could you consider a donation?
NPTG is federally recognized 501(C)3 organization and your contributions are totally tax deductible. Many people look for a deserving place to make a donation, as we near the end of the tax year; so we hope you might consider us.
Although no plans are finalized at this time, I would hope that we could plan to mount a plaque near the working elevator in the near future, listing the Wallace Foundation and at least all the major contributors.
